About the Australian Cattle Dog
The Australian Cattle Dog has more aliases than most wanted Aussie felons. These dogs are also known as the Heeler, Red Heeler, Blue Heeler and Queensland Heeler. But, the Australian Cattle Dog is the 'official' AKC breed name for this member of their Herding group. These dogs are called heelers because they were developed in Australia and trained to control cattle herds. They were taught to herd by nipping and biting at the heels of cattle and horses in order to guide the movement of the herd and keep them together. Lining the bottom with newspapers over plastic will make for easy cleanup.

The AKC and your dog breed - Canine Genealogy from DogWorld101.Com
When you shop for a purebred dog, you will probably notice that many breeders use the initials AKC when they talk about their purebred puppies. So just what exactly is the AKC? It's an acronym for the American Kennel Club, a registry for purebred dogs born in the United States. The AKC holds dog shows and obedience competitions, they maintain breed standards, and register puppies of recognized breeds. The AKC registry recognizes dogs from over a hundred different dog breeds.
